(EPA), explained, we are exposed not to one chemical at a time but to multiple chemicals, and we are exposed to these mixtures repeatedly throughout our lives. Some chemicals can cause or contribute to birth defects, cancers, reproductive disorders, and other adverse health outcomes, so it is crucial to understand which chemicals are harmful, their doses and combinations, and in which circumstances they cause harm. EPA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal and state agencies regulate tens of thousands of chemicals that are used in the United States. As part of its oversight, EPA conducts risk assessments to evaluate the potential health effects of these chemicals and to determine whether and how they can be used safely. Traditionally, risk assessments and regulations have focused on the effects of single chemicals, but this approach does not reflect the reality of our exposure in today’s world, Birnbaum observed. Exposure Assessment to Environmental Pollutants in Human Health Risk Assessment Studies; Overview on New Approaches
Background & objectives: Because of human exposure to various environmental risk factors during the lifetime, the actual exposure estimation has been considered as one of the most important challenges for researchers and decision makers. Considering the contribution of environmental risk factors in the burden of diseases, this study aimed to provide new approaches in exposure assessment filed b...

متن کاملCumulative Risk Assessment: An Overview of Methodological Approaches for Evaluating Combined Health Effects from Exposure to Multiple Environmental Stressors
Systematic evaluation of cumulative health risks from the combined effects of multiple environmental stressors is becoming a vital component of risk-based decisions aimed at protecting human populations and communities. This article briefly examines the historical development of cumulative risk assessment as an analytical tool, and discusses current approaches for evaluating cumulative health e...
متن کاملThe provision of a scientifically defensible basis for perchlorate and goitrogen exposure limits
This Working Paper first considers the rationality of regulatory decisions on environmental exposures characterised by cumulative and aggregate risk pathways. This leads to development of a methodology for aggregate and cumulative risk assessment for compounds acting through the same mode of action, and uses that methodology to consider the exemplar case of alternative scientific strategies for...
متن کاملA feasibility study of cumulative risk assessment methods for drinking water disinfection by-product mixtures.
Humans are exposed daily to complex mixtures of chemicals, including drinking water disinfection by-products (DBPs) via oral, dermal, and inhalation routes. Some positive epidemiological and toxicological studies suggest reproductive and developmental effects and cancer are associated with consumption of chlorinated drinking water. Thus, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted ...
